Hifab International’s East Africa Office celebrates one year!

On September 15 2010 the new regional office for Hifab International was inaugurated in Nairobi, Kenya. One year later, the office is well established both administratively (which was a big challenge) and market wise. During the year we have managed to start a number of new projects in the region as well as secured our position as an important project management company in the countries we are active in. Below we highlight some of our most recent achievements.
Impact evaluation of education project in Ethiopia
In August Hifab International signed a contract with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of a World Bank funded project in the education sector in the country, the ”Comprehensive Evaluation of the General Education Quality Improvement Programme (GEQIP)”. Hifab’s assignment involves the design and implementation of a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of an ongoing Ethiopian education programme. The evaluation is national and involves visiting the different regions, down to school and even class room level, for data collection, interviews and discussions with pupils, staff and other stakeholders. The evaluation started in mid August and includes two more phases during a two years period. Hifab International is the lead consultant for the assignment, teaming up with Opifer Oy from Finland.
Impact assessment of Tanzania Education Authority’s interventions Hifab International recently signed a contract with the Tanzania Education Authority to conduct an impact assessment of the interventions by the Tanzania Education Fund. The assignment involves quantitative and qualitative surveys in seven regions in the country and will result in recommendations for the future direction of the fund. The assignment will start in mid October.
Extension of technical assistance to Ministry of Housing in Kenya
	The Technical Assistance (TA) for the Ministry of Housing’s preparation and implementation of the IDA, Sida and AFD (French development assistance) supported Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Programme (KISIP) has been ongoing for two years. The result in terms of increased capacity at the Ministry and a well prepared KISIP, has been much appreciated by the Client, who asked for an extension of the TA support. Sida, who is funding the TA, is also satisfied with Hifab’s work and has agreed to a contract extension up until last December 2012. The TA is at the moment focusing on assisting the KISIP team to plan and implement tenure regularisation and infrastructure improvements in informal areas in 15 municipalities all over Kenya.
Support to EU’s infrastructure desk in Malawi As part of a consortium, Hifab has won a project to support the infrastructure desk for the so-called National Authorising Officer (NAO) of the European Union. The desk is in charge of all infrastructure projects funded by EU in Malawi and our task is to be technical advisor and build capacity amongst the local staff at the desk and in the NAO.
