China will spend at least 12 billion yuan (US$1.76 billion) to subsidise smaller, fuel efficient cars by 2012, as part of broader plans to cut fuel emissions in the world’s biggest auto market, Reuters reported, citing the country’s top economic planning agency. A study by Chinese and US researchers concluded that implementing electric vehicles in China will increase emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide. Petrol-hybrid electric vehicles, the study in Environmental Science & Technology said, are more environmentally friendly.
