Air Quality Monitoring
Many applications exist where there is a requirement for monitoring ambient or outdoor air quality with respect of Particulates (PM10, PM2.5) gases and solvents or Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons PAHâs. Local and national governments often establish regional or national networks of monitoring stations, whilst industrial processes such as landfill, construction / demolition operations may require monitoring data to evaluate their impact on the local environment. Systems come in a variety of enclosures and configurations and may be located on site boundaries, by roadsides for traffic pollution monitoring, or in rural locations to establish background pollution levels.
Air Sampling
Range of personal air sampling pumps and accessories for undertaking personal exposure monitoring of airbourne dusts, fumes vapour and solvents in accordance with national government health and safety legislation and guidelines. All pumps are fully accredited for use for sampling and undertaking risk assesments to HSE-MDHS, EH40, NIOSH and other national sampling methodologies. For use by professional Industrial Hygienists, Occupational Health Safety and Environment managers.
Indoor Air Quality
With many people spending up to 90% of their working life indoors, it is important to monitor the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Parameters of special interest are Temperature, Humidity, Air Velocity, CO, CO2 and Ozone. Regular monitoring ensures compliance with WHO guidelines and can help reduce work related sicknesss or Sick Building Syndrome (SBS).
Noise
Noise instruments for either monitoring workplace or environmental noise. Noise is monitored in the workplace to protect an employee from hearing loss. This can be done by personally worn products (dosimeters) or hand held sound level meters. The selection of the required hearing protection can also be performed via the use of these instruments.
VORTEX Ultra Flow
The problem of asbestos is still with us and is the subject of stringent legislation for its removal and disposal. The requirement for quick sample collection and counting of airborne fibre in the shortest time possible means a far higher flow rate than with more conventional sampling methods is required. The VORTEX Ultra Flow is designed with this application in mind but also retains the portability of personal samplers.
Challenge Technology
AER-200 Respirometer
The AER-200 Respirometer can be used for both aerobic and anaerobic wastewater applications. The AER-200 Respirometer is designed for batch and laboratory applications. When you use the AER-200 Respirometer, here's what you get: The widest range of oxygen uptake rate measures...as low as 0.06 mg/hr and as high as 600 mg/hr...wide enough to meet any of your applications. The widest range of detection for anaerobic gas production ... from 0.05 ml/hr to 1,500 ml/hr. Highly accurate flow measurement...you can "trust" the data you generate. Easy data collection...the computer does the work. the data can be used directly or exported to your spreadsheet or other data processing programs. Data collection flexibility...intervals can be set from 1 minute to 720 minutes to meet your needs You know exactly where you are in each test from on-screen tabular and graphical indications of the test progress...no more guessing on your part. An easy-to-set up respirometer system...modular design allows you to use only the components to meet your needs. Flexibility...you can use reactor volumes ranging from less than 50 ml to 20 l or larger. More flexibility...you can use different reactor configurations during any test set up. And more flexibility...you can run aerobic and anerobic tests simultaneously on one system. An easy-to-use respirometer system...you minimize set up time by using standard laboratory glassware...you reduce cleanup time because grease is not required to seal the reaction vessels...you can withdraw gas or liquid samples from the reaction vessels at any time during a test. User Friendly Software...WindowsTM-based software presents data as cumulative oxygen uptake and oxygen uptake rate when operating in the aerobic mode and cumulative gas production and gas production rate when operating in the anaerobic mode. Training to use the system is easy...almost anyone can do it.
AER-200S Soil-Compost Respirometer
The Challenge AER-200S Soil/Compost Respirometer is ideally suited to determine rates of oxygen uptake or anoxic gas production rates in soil or compost samples - as may occur in upper layers of soil under natural conditions or in mixed compost reactors. The AER-200S Soil/Compost Respirometer can provide useful information for determining steps in soil bio-remediation. Many companies are developing products that assist or increase the degradation rate of toxic chemicals. This unit can provide quick and easy quantitative data to support such claims. This unit can also help municipal and industrial sites that need to understand the gas production rates of the dried solids. This objective is accomplished with a perforated sample column in a sealed reactor column. Soil Column Specifications Soil, Compost, and Bio-Solid testing equipment must overcome two important principals: Stagnant air gradients and temperature control. Challenge created a convenient two chamber system to do just that. Reactor Column: The reactor chamber allows for a headspace around the entire sample and allows for maximum surface area resulting in maximum oxygen uptake rates. Sample Column: The sample column serves three major functions. The base of the sample column is a unique magnetic coupled fan that works in conjunction with the MS-300 Magnetic Stirrer. This feature allows the air to be circulated in and around the sample without injecting or removing air from the reactor eliminating stagnant atmosphere gradients. The sample column is a perforated cylinder that allows for maximum surface-to-reactor contact. The sample column cap functions as the KOH well for carbon dioxide absorption for measurements or anaerobic measurements when methane values are required. Click here for the AR-295 Diagram. The AER-200S uses easy and reliable luer fittings for all connections. The need for messy greases and special configurations are eliminated. This system can measure aerobic and anaerobic reactions very easily by changing the position of two connections at the measuring cell. The reactor column has two ports purging the head space. Stirring speeds are unified across all samples with a single control dial. Temperature control is critical for any respirometric study, so Challenge Technology recommends the use of either a temperature controlled environmental chamber or a heater/cooler and water bath such as the H/C-230 and W/C-200. The W/C-200 sits on the stirrer base without compromising magnetic stirring efficiency. The H/C-230 is then used to circulate the water throughout the entire bath to maintain consistent and stable temperatures. Challenge recommends a circulating heating/cooling unit for uniform temperature as opposed to immersion heaters that can produce pockets of differing temperatures. The AER-200S is available in a 4-Reactor set and 8-Reactor Set. For individuals already owning the AER-200 Respirometer, the Soil/Compost Column can be ordered individually (AR-295). For more information about the measuring system and capabilities see the AER-200 Aerobic/Anaerobic Respirometer
MS-300 Magnetic Stirrer
A key component to respirometric testing is the oxygen transfer limit. So, Challenge Technology experimented with many stirrers, but found that all the stirring units available could not reach the high speeds required without the risk of spin-off and possibly nullifying an entire test. So, Challenge set out to create the best multi-position stirrer available.
OLR-300 On-Line Respirometer
The OLR-300 On-Line Respirometer is a true "on-line" respirometer which gives oxygen uptake rates for treatment plant operations.

pH-Fix color fixed test strips
Always ready for use pH-Fix test strips are used for rapid pH testing directly at the point of interest. They are always ready for immediate use. Coming with a complete color chart they are readily calibrated. As single use devices they are completely maintenance free. For careful testing of dangerous, poisonous or aggressive liquids the strips have the optimal design. The longest available handle effectively protects the user from contact with the sample. This increases the safety of operation and adds handling ease. Patented technology for optimal sample protection In the production the indicator reacts with the paper of the test pad to form a chemical bond. The dye is fixed to the test strip and can not bleed into the sample. This protects the sample against contamination and enables measurements in weakly buffered or strongly alkaline solutions. Brilliant colours for exact results pH-Fix test strips feature up to four different indicator pads to cover the complete pH-range. The color chart exactly matches both color and position of the pads on the strips. This enables highly precise pH-determination and makes the application rapid and reliable.
Test papers for qualitative determinations
Qualitative determination of ions and chemical compounds With the aid of test papers for qualitative determinations, the presence of Ion and chemical compounds can be asserted with low effort. A color change is effected, if the concentration of the researched substance is situated above the specific detection limit.

Vertical mixers and dryers
Operational volumes 20 - 80.000 litres Design with single or double helix or as centre tube screw mixer The right choice for every application The AVA conical mixers and dryers with their characteristic single or double helix were developed at the end of the 90s in order to find a solution to a problem that continually occurs with traditional conical devices with rotary screws. On the one hand is a risk of product contamination by means of transmission parts in the product chamber, and on the other hand, they have a tendency to develop faults, thereby increasing maintenance costs. An additional bonus was provided by shortened mixing and drying times and improved cleanability. The helix agitator processes dry or wet product, fluid or sticky bulk materials, filer cakes, sludge and liquids of various viscosities. The conical devices are ideal for almost any mixing task and the heated version can also serve as a dryer, reactor or evaporator.

Landfill: Surface Water Collection and Removal System (SWCRS)
Landfill capping are typically waterproofed using either a geomembrane or a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL). Infiltrating rainwater flowing over the liner drastically reduces the coefficient of friction at the soil/membrane interface producing, in addition, overpressures that can certainly promote slippage of the soil layer over the covering system. TENAX TENDRAIN geocomposites, properly installed on top of the waterproofing layer, shall be selected to reduce the amount of rainwater that might reach the liner interface. Surface water infiltrating through the cover soil will accumulate above the barrier layer and generate detrimental pore water pressure if it is not properly drained. Excessive head buildup due to inadequate drainage can cause catastrophic failure of the cover, numerous seepage-induced landfill slope failures have been recorded and analyzed to confirm this. TENAX TENDRAIN geocomposites and TENAX GNT provide the highest flow capacity among any geonet. The long-term in-soil transmissivity of TENAX TENDRAIN is in the order of 6 x 10-3 m2/s at a gradient of 0.1, and 4 x 10-3 m2/s at a gradient of 0.33. Long-term (10,000 hour) testing indicates that TENAX TENDRAIN maintains over 90% of its thickness when exposed to long-term compressive loads. This retained thickness maintains an open flow channel into which geotextiles are kept from intruding and rain water is free to flow.
Stabilization of landslides
Installation of geojute and TENAX TT geogrids. To restore a failed slope, the soil is often substituted with a different type of soil with superior geotechnical properties, significantly increasing material procurement costs and the environmental impact. In these cases, the use of TENAX TT SAMP geogrids allows the reconstruction of the slope by taking advantage of the on-site soil and assures a steep vegetated face. In this way the environmental impact is minimized and the reinforced slope is reintroduced back into its natural state without causing a negative environmental impact. To restore a landslide, it is necessary to remove the collapsed soil, to grade the backfill slope and compact the foundation and to reconstruct the slope in layers of well compacted soil and geogrids. Overall the slope can be more easily and much more rapidly restored since there are no foundations requiring excavation, no concrete formwork to set up, no reinforcement steel bars to align, and no time lost waiting for the cement to cure. The inclusion of TENAX TT SAMP geogrid layers will intersect the failure slip circle and impede the progressive sliding and deterioration of the rebuilt slope. Of extreme importance is the fact that a geogrid/reinforced slope has an intrinsic seismic resistance. Due to its superior elasto-plastic characteristics and to the damping effects conferred to the soil by the geogrids, the reinforced slope is not subject to failure during earthquakes, even when of considerable magnitude.
