Environmental use of limestone products
Limestone products Limestone is used to manufacture many different crushed and ground products sold with brand name Nordkalk. Limestone products are used for soil improvement in order to neutralise acidity, for cleaning flue gases in power plants, for alkalising water, in animal feeds and as fillers in asphalt, paper and plastics, for example. Nordkalk produces limestone products at ten sites in Finland, five in Sweden, three in Estonia and four in Poland. Dolomite is extracted at Kurevere in Estonia. Production The limestone usually has to be extracted by means of blasting but the softest types can be excavated by machine. The extracted stone is transported for rough crushing after which it is processed further, for example, by, crushing, sifting, grinding, refining or burning. In Lappeenranta, Finland, Nordkalk uses a flotation process. The limestone is first ground into a wet slurry and the concentrated calcite is separated from the slurry by flotation

The use of sound calibrators dates back to the days when it was easier to design a stable sound calibrator than a stable sound level meter. Today, sound measuring instruments, in general, are as stable as the sound calibrators. However, measuring microphones are very delicate devices designed to fulfil very rigid specifications. This makes them vulnerable and subject to damage unless care is taken. One may therefore say that a calibrator is just as much a verification of proper operation as it is a device for re-adjustment of sensitivity of sound measuring instruments. The Norsonic selection of sound calibrators comprises three types, viz. the Nor1251, the Nor1252 and the Nor1253. The difference between them lies in their accuracy; while the Nor1251 is a class 1 calibrator and the Nor1252 is a class 2 calibrator, the Nor1253 is no less than a class L calibrator. It also satisfy all class 1 requirements!

INITIATIVES
Since its very beginning, Novamont has worked to build partnerships and to collaborate with government bodies, institutions and firms, to develop the project "Living Chemistry for Quality of Life". The partnerships operate in a wide variety of areas, from the search for innovative solutions in different industrial sectors (from the car industry to packaging), to defining standards for analysing product performance, such as the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which was created together with the Italian environmental protection agency ANPA, following indications of the European Environmental Agency. The objective that has driven the work of Novamont, is to create an interdisciplinary team involving universities, research organisations, businesses, and control bodies, to produce real instruments that support sustainable development. With this in mind, for more than ten years, Novamont has been developing and spreading know-how about integrated systems for the collection and disposal of solid urban waste, about minimising waste, and about the most advanced solutions for using renewable raw materials (RRM) of agricultural origin. Because of its work and commitment, Novamont has been called to take part in various international bodies and commissions, including the European Climate Change Programme workgroup.
NOVAMONT'S MISSION, AN AMBITIOUS PROJECT
Novamont was created as a Montedison research centre and given the ambitious objective of “Living Chemistry for Quality of Life”. Since the outset Novamont has made significant contributions to creating a new industrial policy capable of combining the requirements of development and sustainability and has created a system integrating chemistry, agriculture, industry and the environment for “sustainable development” with low environmental impact. Its mission is to find solutions to the pressing problems of environmental pollution by developing products from renewable raw materials of agricultural origin, which minimise production of post-consumption waste, and processes entailing low environmental impact.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Waste, its management and disposal, constitutes one of the greatest environmental priorities and involves all areas and the whole country: from the countryside to the towns. Thanks to Novamont research and to the local authorities that are sensitive to this problem, Italy is in the forefront in the study of solutions that optimise the cost and performance of integrated waste collection systems. WHAT IS MATER-BI®
Naturally biodegradable and compostable Mater-Bi® is an innovative family of bioplastics that uses substances obtained from plants, such as corn starch, and biodegradable polymers obtained both from renewable raw materials and fossil raw materials. Manufactured in the factory in Terni, Mater-Bi® comes in granular form and can be processed using the most common transformation techniques for plastics. It can be used to create products whose characteristics are similar to or even better than those of traditional plastics, but which are perfectly biodegradable and compostable. The different forms of Mater-Bi® are known as ‘grades’ and each one is identified by a different code.

NOXON Decanter Centrifuges result in substantial volume reduction in both the industrial and municipal applications. Among the many types of sludge that advantageously can be dewatered you will find: raw sludge, biological sludge, digested sludge, waterworks sludge, slaughterhouse sludge, paper/cellulose sludge, fish sludge, oil sludge etc. Our centrifuge is compact and low maintenance. The NOXON decanter centrifuge requires only a small amount of space in comparison with chamber filter presses and belt presses. This results in lower building costs and investment costs. NOXON Decanter Centrifuges are available in a number of different sizes and they can be adapted to suit customer requirements. Customer requirements may include demands on the materials used, the height of the foundation, the operating system or the color. NOXON Decanter Centrifuges for sludge dewatering will remain reliable and functional year after year. The NOXON decanter centrifuge makes it possible to meet more stringent environmental demands as well as reducing operating costs. How a decanter centrifuge works: The central part of the machine is a rotating drum, which contains an independently rotating screw. The sludge is fed via the inlet pipe to the mixing chamber in the "core" of the first part of the screw, which is where polymer is added to make the sludge flocculate. The sludge then passes through ports in the mixing chamber out towards the outer walls of the drum. The dewatered sludge is transported out through the machine by the screw. The centrate (or supernatant) is decanted from the inner surface of the pond through centrate pipes. The water level (or pond depth) in the drum can be adjusted in accordance with the characteristics of the material to be processed. The drum and the screw rotate independently of one another at up to 3,600 rpm, depending on the type of machine and the type of sludge. The dewatering principles used are known as the "concurrent" or "counter-current" method. The concurrent method permits extremely low differential speeds. The differential speed is the difference between the speed of the drum and the speed of the screw. Low differential speeds mean longer residence times in the centrifuge, which result in drier sludge and considerably less wear. The counter-current principle is more suitable for a sludge that is easy to dewater and when a high capacity is desired.
Polymer System
This equipment can be controlled by our sludge computer SP3000. The polymer machine can be delivered with a separate power cabinet. NOXONs polymer machine is of the “continuous-in-batches” type. This means that the mixing begins at the start level in section I (around 200 mm below the stop level). Since all the sections of the tank are linked, the polymer suspension can be withdrawn continuously from section III. The two sections of the tank with a “rest zone” between them means that the polymer is mixed thoroughly with the water to create a very homogenous suspension and long residence time. The polymer is mixed with water via a cylindrical water curtain. The suspension is then pumped up into the mixing tank, section I. We measure the water flow to the blender and have a frequency converter on the dosage screw, which provides a constant concentration in the polymer suspension. There are a number of alarms on the blender to ensure that everything functions correctly. The pump makes it feasible to have the blender unit and the tank unit separated from each other. The blender can also be supplied in big sack design. We can deliver the polymer machine with a dust protection system to prevent polymer dust from spreading in the facility. The polymer machine can also be used for liquid polymer if a dosage pump is installed.

Connecting NOXONs SP3000 Sludge Regulator to our decanter centrifuge will enable you to control the sludge dewatering process as safely as possible. Our sludge regulator can control several functions all at once. The following processes can be controlled/managed: ¡ Regulation ¡ Recording ¡ Monitoring Your centrifuge can be allowed to operate unmanned 24 hrs a day since the sludge regulator continuously monitors. Should anything unexpected happen, our sludge regulator has alarm functions that can stop and flush your centrifuge. The SP3000 is an advanced industrial computer, which has been adapted for sludge dewatering. This computer is equipped with software that has been specially designed to meet the demands of the NOXON centrifuge. User-friendly Monitoring the process has been simplified with the large sludge regulator monitor. This graphically shows what is happening during operation, and the monitor display is updated continuously. If the operator requires further information, he can use the cursor to choose desired function. Statistics or trend curves can be displayed on screen, and the operator can analyse the process for the day/week by means of these. The regulator also indicates when a service is necessary, depending on the operating time. All NOXON control panels are equipped with a modem to enable full support and the possibility of troubleshooting and updating. It is also possible to contact a network via an Internet connection. The sludge regulator can communicate with the superior system. Communication is done via Modbus ASCII + RTU or COMLI. With a converter we are also able to use Profibus DP. The combination of a NOXON Decanter Centrifuge and an SP3000 will give you maximum control over your sludge dewatering process. Your sludge will be drier and your handling costs will decrease.
Vibration sensor
The vibration sensor monitors the balance of the machine. If the vibration exceeds 25mm/s² the computer will sound an alarm. A wide range of accessories are available for our centrifuges. This efficient system operated by one man can handle up to 1000 bins a day. The automated side loader enables the driver/operator to pick up a bin that is up to 2,4 metres from the body, empty the bin into the hopper and place the bin back in position without leaving the cab. The unique pendulum principle of the compactor gives an excellent compaction ratio and also contributes to low life cycle costs as it has very few moving parts.
