Expansion Turbines

Atlas Copco Gas and Process is a trusted, world-leading developer and supplier of expansion turbine technology. Atlas Copco Gas and Process has developed a pronounced global presence in expansion turbine, or “turboexpander,” technology. In fact, we recently extended our market reach with our 2007 acquisition of Mafi-Trench, a leading supplier of expansion turbines in the oil and gas industry. In the industrial marketplace, expansion turbines are instrumental in air separation, hydrocarbon business and cryogenic applications. Atlas Copco Gas and Process engineers expansion turbines featuring highly beneficial technical characteristics. Our high-pressure expander units can handle pressures as high as 110 bar. We are capable of fulfilling a variety of custom specifications within this broad capacity range, as our expansion turbines provide precise, continuous control between 10% and 150% of design flow. In air separation applications, we were the first to engineer cryogenic expansion turbines with dry gas seals, an innovation that provides optimum insulation and, as a result, maximum productivity. Expansion turbine operation is also the driving force in pressure letdown applications, natural gas treatment and the recovery of waste heat and energy from both process applications and natural resources. Perhaps most notably, our gas expanders are increasingly being implemented in geothermal applications—a growth market based on harnessing the renewable energy from natural geothermal resources. Our position in this emerging market is just another example that—like all of our turbomachinery—our expansion turbines help create the solutions of the future.

Gas Compressors

Atlas Copco Gas and Process delivers highly-engineered centrifugal gas compressors serving a host of industrial applications. In engineering our centrifugal gas compressors, we are constantly looking for ways to maximize our customers’ productivity. Atlas Copco Gas and Process gas compressors serve a variety of markets including air separation, hydrocarbon business (upstream, midstream, and downstream applications), mechanical vapor compression and wastewater oxygen compression. Certain gas compressor designs feature multi-staging (up to 8 stages), allowing our compressors to handle combined processes in one cycle and providing a vast flow range. Our gas compressors can handle flows ranging from 500-200,000 m3/h with the ability to achieve pressures up to 80 bar through multi-staging. Among the many areas of hydrocarbon business Atlas Copco Gas and Process serves, our machines are also used as natural gas compressors in the liquefaction of natural gas. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a cornerstone commodity in hydrocarbon business, and our gas compressors streamline LNG productivity for customers worldwide.
