Paques builds world's largest ANAMMOX® wastewater treatment plant for ammonium removal in China
Paques Environmental Technology Shanghai, a sister company of Paques bv in Balk, the Netherlands, has reached an agreement for the design and supply of the largest effluent treatment plant for ammonium removal in the history of the company
Paques Environmental Technology Shanghai, a sister company of Paques bv in Balk, the Netherlands, has reached an agreement for the design and supply of the largest effluent treatment plant for ammonium removal in the history of the company. The ANAMMOX® process has a capacity for conversion of 11 tons of nitrogen per day. The size of the plant is almost ten times larger than the largest plant built so far. The water treatment will be supplied to the Meihua Group, a large Chinese producer of among others glutamate, starch and amino acids from maize.
The biological ANAMMOX® (ANaerobic AMMonium OXidation) process is a breakthrough in removing nitrogen from wastewater. ANAMMOX® is a sustainable and cost effective alternative for the conventional active sludge system. The process has been developed in association with Technical University Delft and Radboud University Nijmegen. The installation in China is the sixth full scale application of the technology. It concerns the first in China. This project is an important step in the further marketing of the ANAMMOX® process because of the size and its location.
The customer has chosen for a combination of ANAMMOX® and BIOPAQ®IC (anaerobic water treatment). An important difference with the conventional active sludge system is that for the conversion of nitrogen with the ANAMMOX® process no organic carbon is consumed. The ANAMMOX® - BIOPAQ®IC combination offer considerable advantages to the customer:
1. Biogas production
In this case, by using the BIOPAQ®IC, organic pollution present in the effluent can be converted to 4 million m3 biogas (methane) per year. The biogas is provided to the production process as fuel for heating.
2. CO2 emission reduction
By savings on methanol, energy and recovery of biogas, a saving of more than 10,000 ton CO2 is realised on an annual basis.
3. Lower capital outlay
The conversion of nitrogen and organic substance with the ANAMMOX® - BIOPAQ®IC process go much more efficiently with respect to the active sludge system. The total water treatment is for this reason 85% smaller, in total 90,000 m3 reactor volume will be saved.
4. Lower operational costs
Yearly 1,000 tons of methanol is saved. In addition the energy consumption is reduced and less surplus sludge is produced.
The ANAMMOX® process is widely applicable and can provide advantages in several industries for the treatment of effluent. Some examples are:
- Municipal effluent treatment (centrate from sludge digestion)
- Organic solid waste treatment (landfills, composting, digestion)
- Food industry
- (Petro) Chemical industry
- Metallurgical industry
- Mining industry
Paques develops and produces cost-effective water and gas purification systems using innovative biotechnology. These systems offer industries and municipalities added value, such as: the re-use of and savings on water, the generation of energy and the reclamation of valuable substances from the wastewater. Paques' clients combine economic progress and environmental responsibility.
In the development and application of innovative environmental biotechnology Paques aims to be the marketleader. Paques contributes to the world in which we live through the worldwide introduction of our technology, which is based on sustainable and natural processes. In this way, we bridge the gap between economic progress and environmental responsibility, focusing at all times on the well-being of our employees and other stakeholders.
The future scarcity of fossil fuels and the expected influence of the greenhouse effect are enhancing the importance of renewable or green energy. Alongside solar, water and wind-driven technologies, biogas production from (renewable) organic resources is growing rapidly as a highly efficient, profitable and sustainable source of energy.
