Europes leading independantly owned manufacturer of truck mounted heavy duty road sweepers. The Scarab range of single engine hydrostatic machines caters for all sweeping applications. The 3.5 tonne Scarab Minor was designed specifically for urban and precinct work. The Scarab Merlin offers class leading payloads in the 7.5 to 12 tonne category for Local Authorities, whilst the Magnum can be mounted on chassis from 15 to 19 tonne for more demanding tasks and specialist contractor applications. The most recent addition of the auxiliary engine powered Mistral now enables Scarab to offer a modern alternative to two engine sweepers and further exploit emerging world markets by providing kits for local mounting.
Though only founded in 1979, Scarab has certainly made a major impact on the sweeper market. It all began earlier when the Late Rodger Hoadley and two colleagues came up with a radically different approach to truck based sweepers. Up until then, sweepers were built by mounting a self contained sweeper body onto a conventional truck chassis. The vehicle was propelled by the truck engine and transmission, while the sweepers main suction fan, main sweeping brush, side brushes and tipping gear were operated by a Auxiliary engine.
Rodger knew that it would be far more cost effective to do away with the donkey engine, saving weight and releasing valuable extra capacity for the hopper and water tank. The problem was how to drive all that sweeper equipment and the vehicle with a single engine. The answer was relatively simple: to add a transfer box into the driveline, and use the engine to drive a hydraulic pump and thus generate the required hydraulic power, the Scarab Hydrostatic drive was created. This solution has considerable advantages; with the hydrostatic drive disconnected, the vehicle can travel at speed between jobs, or to and from waste sites, with the hydrostatic drive engaged, power is provided to drive the vehicle, the suction fan, the brushes, spray systems etc.
By 1988 and years of research and development the first Single-engined truckmount sweeper was on the production line, with in no time it proved a success and from that point on Scarab have never looked back, but always forward with an eye for improving every aspect of the modern sweeper, so far we think we`ve done a very good job.
The first Scarabs the MKII quickly gained the young company a reputation for innovation and versatility. By 1984 the Minor, was in production, mounted on the versatile Multicar chassis. It was to prove a resounding success. By the end of the decade, the chassis was 'all Scarab' and the Minor started to excel. Scarab's familiar evolutionary process was firmly in evidence and in 1992, the hydrostatic Minor made its debut, establishing a policy of continuous development that can be traced directly to the current model, the VM Minor.
By 1988 the first of the single-engine range the well-known Major Hydrostatic truck-mounted machines were leaving the factory, by now the Scarab name had firmly made its mark and the single-engine design truly changed the way the world looked at truck-mount sweepers, in the early 90`s we pushed the Single-engine design even further by producing the Scarab Maxim Unidrive range and the deceptively capacious Monic with its unique Omni-drive system, proving that Scarab's flair for innovation was as strong as ever.
As the century turned, 22 years after the Scarab story began, the Scarab Merlin and Magnum truckmounts, natural successors to the Scarab Major and Maxim range , started rolling off the production lines, bringing to bear the combined experience of Rodger Hoadley, his design engineers and Scarab users from around the world.

| Scarab Merlin XP truckmount sweeper Following on from the great success of the Merlin range of sweepers, Scarab have seen fit to develop a derivative to allow UK users to continue to exploit the 7.5 tonne category still popular amongst Local Authorities and Contractors. The Scarab Merlin XP truckmount sweeper has been specifically designed to maximise the payload potential of the 7.5 tonne class sweeper, which remains justly popular amongst municipal operators. Maintaining a viable payload to GVW ratio is vital to productivity and, in the final analysis, value for money and this is where the Scarab Merlin XP comes in. The revised 7.5 tonne Scarab Merlin XP ensures Scarab`s payload advantage remains, achieving almost half a tonne Xtra Payload over its competitors over even the latest competitive equipment on the market. The Melin XP has Impressive Suction Power meaning that a Single Pass will be enough even on the most stubborn of sites along with a maximum `no trails` sweep width of up to 2950mm and a standard water tank which will hold up to 900 litres, very handy when utilizing the low pressure water system or for use with the powerful street wash system. The Scarab Merlin XP incorporates the Scarab CANbus 2 system and provides the operator with an intuitive panel layout with all sweeping functions available close to hand with Visible switches. (no hidden confusing menus) Its simple joystick control allows selection of forward or reverse modes without the need to change gear virtually eliminating the clutch and brake wear experienced when sweeping with auxiliary engine machines. The Scarab system was designed not only for ease of sweeping operation but also to eliminate the complex wiring associated with other sweepers and negates the need to use a laptop computer as all the diagnostic and fault finding features are built into the cab-mounted control panel. In the U.K Holders of a standard U.K Car license can legally drive the Merlin XP thanks to Grandfather rights granted to drivers who passed their driving tests before 1997. Available as Hydrostatic or Unidrive. By only having only the single vehicle engine, which is tested to the latest emission legislation, gives REDUCED EXHAUST POLLUTION and REDUCED FUEL CONSUMPTION, making the Scarab Merlin XP one of the most environmentally friendly truck mounted road sweepers ever built. |
