| Combined sewer, Freising (Germany) This combined sewer with a length of 5.7 km was driven through the aquifer using an earth-pressure-balance shield. The reinforced concrete pipes have an internal diameter of up to DN 2200. |
| Cut-off wall at Haveleck, Berlin Installation of a 570 m long and 60 cm thick single-phase cut-off wall for the containment of contamination on an 18,500 m² site located right next to the river Havel. With a max. depth of 54 m, the cut-off wall panels extend 2 m into the brown-coal silt aquiclude. The single-phase cut-off wall covers an area of 26,000 m² |
| Digesters These three egg-shaped, prestressed concrete digesters have a capacity of 16,700 m³ each, making them the largest structures of this type in the world. They have a diameter of 29.4 m and a height of 46.7 m.* |
| Pumped-storage plant, Goldisthal Lignite-fired power stations are difficult to regulate: they supply the same amount of energy around the clock. The surplus electricity generated at night is used by pumped-storage plants to replenish the upper reservoir. During the day, hydropower plants can then supply peak-load electricity to the grid within a matter of seconds. With a total capacity of 1,060 MW, the Goldisthal pumped-storage plant ranks among the largest and technically most advanced plants of this type in Europe. The upper reservoir holds 12 million m³ of water; the machine hall and transformer cavern have a total excavated volume of 185,000 m³. There is a difference in elevation of 300 m between the upper and the lower reservoir | |
