Drinking water, a priceless good...
Membratec projects, builds and commercialises treatment plants using membrane technology for the production of municipal drinking water.
Membratec also integrates membrane filtration in more complex treatment chains and realises centralised water softening and brackish water desalination plants.
Water will be of primary interest in this third millenium ! Making drinking water is one of Membratec's skills, avoiding to pollute it is another one. Membratec builds membrane separation plants (microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration) for drinking water production or industrial fluids processing. Drinking water production using polymer membranes is a new way to treat water with color, odor and hygiene problems. The ultrafiltration process uses porous membranes through which water is forced to flow. Suspended solids present in raw water are mechanically held back. The membrane acts like a strainer whose holes are less than a fraction of a micron in diameter. Larger particles are separated from the water: - suspended solids (sand, clay, loam) responsible for turbidity spikes after storms; their size is of some microns. - pathogens (parasites, bacteria, viruses) possibly present in spring or ground water; with a size of some tenths of a micron. Advantages of the ultrafiltration process The UF process guaranties a perfectly clear and disinfected drinking water, whatever the raw water quality. Besides, it requires no addition of chemical products such as chlorine, ozone or flocculating agents to the treated water. UF plants are compact and modular. Their capacity can easily be increased. Performance For raw waters with turbidity levels below 500 NTU, Membratec UF treatment produces water as follows: Turbidity < 0.03 NTU Retention of germs (E.coli) > 6 logs ( > 99.9999 %) Power consumption 0.1 to 0.2 kWh / m3 Yield 90 to 98 % Transmembrane pressure 0.3 to 1.0 bar
| Desalination Seawater desalination and brackish water treatment represent the most common applications of reverse osmosis in the municipal drinking water domain.
The recent introduction of energy recovery systems has made the use of this membrane technology more cost-effective than alternative processes such as distillation.

| Complex treatment chains The quality of a raw water sometimes requires more lengthy treatments than a clarification or disinfection in order to respect the quality standards for drinking water. In these cases a multi-stage treatment chain is necessary in order to obtain a high quality drinking water.
For these applications, Membratec can offer multi-stage treatment chains, whereby the various stages are chosen in order to solve each raw water quality problem and can therefore be ideally completed with the appropriate membrane treatment. Here follows a non-exhaustive list:

| Drinking water With membranes, a high quality drinking water...
Some municipalities are lucky enough to be able to distribute untreated spring water. We recommend they go on taking great care of their source protection areas.
Many water sources are however contaminated with germs, and often have excessive turbidity. This type of problem is common for karstic springs, but it is also encountered in surface waters issuing from lakes and rivers, or in sources which are fed by surface water.
Ultrafiltration is the ideal technology for the treatment of this type of water, as it clarifies and disinfects in one single stage. Other water quality issues, such as excessive hardness or the presence of dissolved micropollutants (e.g. pesticides), can be solved with nanofiltration, reverse osmosis or otherwise by using hybrid treatments, such as ultrafiltration coupled with activated carbon

| Membratec ultrafiltration Well-proven process
All Membratec plants are not only meant to offer the well-known advantages of ultrafiltration (clarification and disinfection in one single stage), but also provide the clients with a simple, reliable and low-maintenance plant, so that the daily needs of the consumers can be successfully met by keeping operating costs at a low level.
In order to achieve this important aim, Membratec has developed its own process, which ideally integrates the different components of the treatment plant in a fully automatic operating system, requiring only routine controls.
The main characteristics of the Membratec process are: |
| Water softening Membrane technology applied to water softening allows to sensibly improve the quality of drinking water with excessive hardness or sulphate content.
An elimination rate of 94% to 99% for elements such as calcium or sulphates can be obtained by using the appropriate membrane type with an adequately chosen cut-off.
