"In Durban, it is incumbent upon governments to demonstrate their willingness to address climate change by laying out a clear roadmap for how and when a successor framework to the Kyoto Protocol will be achieved, in a manner that could accommodate and recognise efforts at any scale from regional up to global, and set a level of ambition that, in contrast to the current pledges, will actually enable us to limit the average global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius as Heads of State have previously agreed in Copenhagen and Cancun", stressed Miles Austin, Director of the Climate Markets & Investment Association (CMIA).
The first period of the Kyoto Protocol, that currently provides the international framework for how countries together tackle climate change, ends in 2012 and governments have yet to agree on what follows it. The lack of clarity has already resulted in capital flight. Investments in projects that bring down carbon emissions in the developing world have fallen from a high of USD 7.4 billion in 2007 to USD 1.5 billion in 2010. Figures for 2011 are widely expected to reflect a further decline.
Claudia Mennen, CFO at Green Gas International states: "Clarity is the foundation of sustainable development and nowhere more so than with the mitigation of climate change. We are concerned about the lack of progress to date by the authorities towards firm agreements in this field. This results in the delay of investment decisions by sustainable development companies such Green Gas, that are in the business of mitigating methane emissions and using them to produce clean energy."
"A successful response to climate change will be defined by policies that succeed in meaningfully engaging private capital. Our specific suggestions for Durban therefore include further improvements to the Clean Development Mechanism, ensuring that the Green Climate Fund is operationalised and has an explicit strategy to attract private capital, and a formal recognition that countries can use all forms of finance, including markets, to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+)," emphasised Abyd Karmali, President of the CMIA and Global Head of Carbon Markets at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
Green Gas works in partnership with coal mine and landfill owners and operators to improve safety, productivity and environmental conditions through excellent gas management to optimise the utilisation of methane as a clean energy.
Green Gas brings a tradition of engineering and operational excellence to a business that is often not the main focus of the landfill and mine owner. By combining this expertise with our knowledge of the Kyoto Protocol and other renewable energy regimes, we deliver methane mitigation projects based on the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI), to produce valuable tradable carbon credits and renewable energy legislation where applicable.
Our team of international experts is drawn from a variety of backgrounds including mining, power, gas management and environmental protection.
Green Gas International B.V. is a Netherlands-registered company, with a corporate headquarters in Richmond-upon-Thames (London), United Kingdom. It has operations management centres in Germany (Green Gas Germany GmbH and Green Gas Power GmbH); the Czech Republic (Green Gas, DPB a.s.); Switzerland (Hofstetter Umwelttechnik AG) and the USA (G.A.S. Energy Technology, Inc.). In 2007 the company opened a representative office in Beijing, China. The focus of our work is global.
Green Gas works closely with non-profit organisations such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), to help reduce methane emissions from mining and landfill activities and enhance coal mine safety.
Capture the energy
Green Gas International B.V. (Green Gas) converts methane (CH4) emissions from coal mines and landfill sites into clean energy and valuable carbon credits, as provided for under the Kyoto Protocol and international regulatory authorities.
We are a project developer offering an integrated and commercially attractive solution to mine and landfill owners for gas management and utilisation. Our solution includes gas collection, mine gas drainage, project management, operations and maintenance, carbon credits and finance. We not only improve productivity and safety, but also eliminate harmful greenhouse gases and provide new, clean sources of electricity and heat.
We invest in our solutions with our customers - sharing risk and leaving our customers free to focus on their mainstream business.
At Green Gas our reach is global yet our solutions are bespoke. We offer a safe, effective and viable response to methane mitigation while promoting a better environment for all.
Our Vision
Our vision is to be a leading player in the climate mitigation industry. We pursue this through working in partnership with coal mine and landfill site owners to improve their core business and to eliminate or exploit the harmful greenhouse gas emissions (e.g. Methane) that arise from their activities.
Improving the core business
Green Gas improves the core business of customers by improving safety and the productivity of coal mines, by improving gas capture in landfills and by bringing its expertise and focus to bear on the gas utilisation business which is often a non-core business for landfill and mine owners. This focus allows the projects to operate at maximum profitability.
Green Gas provides an integrated solution covering:
- Mine/landfill gas extraction (safety, drainage, ventilation)
- Project design
- Engineering
- Project management procurement and construction
- Operations and maintenance
- Financing and investing in projects (including CDM and JI)
- Carbon credit and energy management.
A wealth of experience
Green Gas offers a 50 year track record in climate mitigation.
In 2007 Green Gas International B.V. was created by a merger with OKD, DBP a.s. , an established Czech pioneer in coal mine methane management and use. It operates in one of the best known countries for coal mine safety, with a 130 km pipeline through which it distributes 65 million m3 methane gas per year to industrial customers.
At the end of 2006, Green Gas acquired the core assets of G.A.S. Energietechnologie (G.A.S.). G.A.S. is a leader in the construction and operation of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants to generate electricity from low quality methane sources in coal mines and landfill sites.
The acquisition of G.A.S. brought Hofstetter Umwelttechnik (Hofstetter) into our Group. Hofstetter is a global leader in the provision of advanced gas flaring technology. Together, Hofstetter and G.A.S. have a combined 50 year track record in climate mitigation.
Our operations cover more than 60 sites in 12 different countries. They have a combined electrical power capacity of over 132 MWel and an annual output of some 747 GWh of electricity. This is equivalent to the annual power requirement of 190,000 four-person households in Central Europe. As clean energy, this electricity also results in annual emission reductions equivalent to that of 600,000 cars.
