Enex is a renewable energy solution provider in the field of harnessing hydropower and specializing in the development of geothermal potential for electrical generation and direct use. The Company is essentially a gateway to the experience and knowledge gained over the last 70 years in harnessing this renewable energy in Iceland. Enex acts as an investor, a geothermal solution provider or forms joint ventures with local partners to finance, develop, construct and operate renewable energy projects. As a turnkey solution provider, the Company offers geothermal combined heat and power plants (CHP), flash steam and binary cycle power plants, as well as geothermal district heating systems.
Enex specializes in the search for opportunities for harnessing power, design, sale of solutions and operation of geothermal power plants by reliance on comprehensive know-how and operational experience. The Company seeks a partner to cooperate with in every market in the fields of technology, ownership and financing.
The objectives set out in its charter are for example:

Develop geothermal, plants for both direct use and generation of electricity, as well as hydropower plants.

Participate, on a commercial basis, in studying, building and subsequently operating geothermal developments as a joint venture partner or part owner / operator.

Offer, on a commercial basis, consulting services, including geothermal exploration and development, hydrological surveys and sedimentation studies, project financing, personnel training, and the provision of tools and techniques specially developed and tested in Iceland for use in these fields.

Our Approach
Enex looks at several ways to structure its approach to each project, for example:
Lead Investor
Design, build and operate geothermal/hydropower plants or district heating systems. Enex may sell or transfer the plant at a predetermined date. These contracts can be BLT (Build-Lease-Transfer), BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) or BOO (Build-Own-Operate).
Solution Provider
Engineering, procurement and construction of geothermal/hydropower plants on turnkey basis. Enex designs the optimal solution, provides procurement of equipment, expert technology and geothermal experience, while teaming up with strong domestic contractors to build and install power plants or district heating systems.
Joint Venture
Team up with strong local partners such as developers or contractors. Form a joint operation company with our joint venture partner based on interest, ability and areas of strength.

Reykjavik Energy Invest
Reykjavik Energy Invest ehf (REI) is Reykjavik Energy’s international business development and investment arm. Reykjavik Energy brings expertise to their partners and investments by focusing on creating partnerships to develop geothermal areas. REI invests in geothermal exploitation rights as well as site development, construction and operation of geothermal fields, and seeks to acquire geothermal plants currently in operation. Reykjavik Energy operates the largest and most modern geothermal district heating system in the world and Iceland's largest geothermal combined heat and power (CHP) plant. The heating system has been operating since before 1930 and its installed capacity is 900 MWth and 240 MWe. Orkuveita Reykjavíkur has accumulated vast operating experience and is also one of the owners' of the Slovakian Galanta Heating System.
Several engineering firms own the remaining shares. Their activities span the whole energy development field and they are practicing both in Iceland and abroad.

| Drilling of Geothermal Wells One of Enex’s sister companies, Iceland Drilling Ltd., has a unique store of geothermal drilling experience that is manifested in having completed more than 6000 wells since 1930. The Icelandic drilling operation may be placed somewhere in between small groundwater drillers and the larger oil and gas drilling contractors. | Geothermal Power Plant Six geothermal flash steam power plants are in operation in Iceland, generating electricity and some also provide heat, commonly named CHP (combined heat and power) plants. The first plant went into operation in 1969. These power plants use steam from geothermal reservoirs that yield temperatures up to 320 °C. More information on these Geothermal Power Plants. The latest addition is the 100 MWe Reykjanes Geothermal Power Plant in Iceland. This is the first geothermal power plant in the world to use steam of such high temperature (290 to 320 °C) for electrical generation. Another geothermal power plant in construction is the 300 MWe Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant that went on-line with the first 90 MWe in October 2006 |

| What is Geothermal The thermal energy stored within the earth's crust is collectively called geothermal energy. In some parts of the world hot rock formations within the crust contain water, which is the ideal medium for carrying this energy up to the earth's surface in a useful form. Geothermal activity, such as hot springs and fumaroles, has been known and made use of for many centuries in places as far apart as China, Latin America and Central Europe. But where does all this hot fluid come from? From deep mine shafts and later from measurements in boreholes it has been known for a long time that temperature in the earth's crust increases with depth. The earth is in fact a great reservoir of heat energy, most commonly evinced at the earth's surface as hot springs. Heat from inner parts of the earth is transported to the surface by conduction (heat flow), in volcanic eruptions and by water in geothermal systems. In areas of active volcanism, the upper crust is frequently intruded by hot magmatic intrusions. These intrusions move heat from the inner parts of the earth towards the outer crust. They are the prime force that usually drives geothermal systems. In order to have a geothermal system that can be utilised, several factors must be coincident. The heat source needs to be large, presence of water is essential and the bedrock has to be porous, since cold water must be able to enter the system, be heated up and ascend to the surface as hot water or steam. In some systems convection is effective in bringing hot fluids up towards the surface. In other areas, usually the low-temperature ones, the hot water can originate at some distance from the surface manifestations. Faults and fractures develop where the earth crust is unstable or is moving, most commonly in areas of active volcanism and rifting |
