For these “difficult to store” materials, we have developed silo systems to prevent stable bridging. The well tried and tested SHW relief system counteracts the natural compaction of the bulk material by “redirecting” the vertical loads into the silo walls. The loose material will be reliably discharged via the SHW discharge systems combined with screw conveyors.

Milestones in our company’s history

The SHW Storage & Handling Solutions GmbH was founded in 1968 as the materials Handling and Process Division of SHW-GmbH in Aalen-Wasseralfingen. It changed in 2003 to an independent limited liability company.

The roots of the company SHW Storage & Handling Solutions GmbH can be traced back to one of the oldest industrial companies in Germany: the Schwäbische Hüttenwerke, first mentioned in 1365. Up to 1921 it was in the possession of the Cistercian monastery, Königsbronn or the king of Wuerttemberg. In 1921 the Schwäbischen Hüttenwerke GmbH was founded. The shareholders were, the state Wuerttemberg and the Gutenhoffnungshuette Aktienverein Oberhausen (GHH), each holding 50%.Later it was integrated into MAN AG of Munich.

Originally SHW Storage & Handling Solutions GmbH produced only rotor discharge systems for the rapidly expanding particle board industry. The variable speed and reliable construction with its exact metering facilities, soon lent itself for use in the environmental industry, the paper industry, the chemical and plastics industry as well as in the animal feed sector. The density of the stored bulk materials in these industries is considerably higher than that in the wood industry.

Automation into one continuous production plant required specific silo installations for materials reception, intermediate storage as well as large capacity storage. We met the customer's requirements for automation with further developments to the live bottom discharge system, travelling screw, sliding frame, eccentric frame, pivoting wheel, rotating screw as well as top rake system for large-surface bulk materials.

Today, we develop, plan and construct not only silo discharge and transport systems but manufacture also steaming silos, bleach towers, reaction silos, plug screws, cooling screws, disintegrators, disc screens and rotating distributors as part of our standard programme.

	Chain conveyor The SHW chain conveyors can connect all the individual processing units of the complete system. They guarantee a reliable and cost-effective transportation method for bulk materials. High operational safety is achieved by using top quality transport chains, accessories and specialist materials.
	eccentric frame The eccentric frame is driven via an eccentric disc, where the wedge-shaped outside of the frame slides under the bulk material and transports it to the inside and into the directional discharge system. The silo can be filled from above (up to 4 screw conveyors). The advantages are evident: high metering exactness, low required space and up to 50 % lower driving power compared to conventional systems. From 1,5m x 1,5m up to 4m x 5m, Max. Filling height up to 8m for dry flakes up to 5 m for wet flakes And in cylindrical silos: From 1,5m up to 5m diameter, Max. Filling height up to 10m for dry flakes Up to 5m for wet flakes With the eccentric frame you can discharge all free flowing bulk materials with a density of <400 kg/mÂł, which do not compress under pressure as well as municipal sludge. The drive of the eccentric frame and the screw drive can be adjusted via frequency converter.
	Receiving Station Function The receiving station takes in material and conveys it for further processing. Material is discharged from a truck, skip or front end loader into the receiving station and transported away for further processing by a chain conveyor. The Receiving station consists of the following main components: drive Unit return line loading area outlet opening dust filter flange connection transport trough The material can be fed into the system by truck, freight car, skips, from end loaders or other conveyors.
	Rotor discharge system Function The rotor system is a patented silo technology and consists of the material relief system which reduces material compaction and the rotor discharge system with one or more discharge screws. The rotor discharge system is installed in the centre of the flat silo bottom. The rotor drum consists of a welded steel construction on which drag arms are fixed which grab into the material. The rotor drive consists of a planetary gear developed specifically by SHW with a specially designed spur gear unit. It is electric motor driven and controlled by a frequency converter. Using multiple discharge screws in one silo it is possible to feed a metered quantity into different devises all at the same time. The material outlet can be arranged in many configurations to suit the system requirements.
	Sliding Frame Function The sliding frame is moved horizontally forward and back by one or more hydraulic cylinders arranged on the outside of the silo. At the same time the bulk material will be transported to the discharge screw arranged below the silo bottom. A discharge screw gives an exact metering out of the material. By arranging more than one discharge screw in the silo, multiple applications can be supplied with a metered feed from a single silo. By keeping the hydraulic cylinder and piston rod extension totally separate, prolongs the working life of the hydraulic cylinders, as they do not come into contact with the bulk material. A stuffing box separates the piston rod extension from the silo wall.
