Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board elects the full-time members of the Presidential Committee and adopts the structure and development plan as well as the construction plan. According to legislation, the term of office of the Founding Supervisory Board expired on September 30, 2011. Since October 01, 2011, the members of the KIT Supervisory Board have been in office.

Executive Board

KIT is managed by the collegial board named "Executive Board". Presidents Professor Dr. Horst Hippler and Professor Dr. Eberhard Umbach and the Vice Presidents Professor Dr. Detlef Löhe and Dr. Peter Fritz took office on October 01, 2009. Their term of office is four years. Further members of the Presidential Committee are Dr. Elke Luise Barnstedt as Vice President for Human Resources and Law since January 01, 2011, and Dr. Ulrich Breuer as Vice President for Finance and Business Affairs since January 01, 2012. Their term of office is six years.

Chief Officers

Since October 1, 2010, Professor Jürgen Becker (Chief Higher Education Officer), Professor Wilfried Juling (Chief Science and Information Officer), Professor Volker Saile und Dr. Joachim Knebel (both Chief Science Officer) act as Chief Officers. Since August 15, 2011, also Dr. Karl-Friedrich Ziegahn acts as Chief Science Officer.

Administrative Management Level

On Administrative Management Level Dr. Uwe Nobbe is responsible for Compliance and Legal Affairs, Dr. Gerhard Schmidt for Technical Infrastructure and Services.

Senate

The Senate confirms the election of full-time board members and issues an opinion on the structural and development plan as well as on the draft economic plan and the finance plan. The Senate of KIT is composed of the board members, the Gender Equality Officer and the ombudswoman for equal opportunities, 25 elected representatives from the university sector and 25 elected representatives from the large-scale research sector.

Equal Opportunity

KIT aims at equal opportunities for women and men in all parts of research and teaching and at possibilities of developing and using their qualifications. With an integrated concept and various actions, the Equal Opportunities team tries to increase significantly the number of women in leading positions and engineering. On the ground of the basic elements for the further development of KIT from April 2011, which were agreed upon by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Federal Republic of Germany, KIT is able to settle aspects of equal opportunity autonomously and consistently.

Staff Council

The tasks of the KIT Staff Council are outlined in the Act on Representation of Staff of State Institutions. They include the control of the implementation of collective agreements and service agreements as well as the support of the integration of employees in need of protection and the securing of jobs. The Staff Council consists of a total of 37 members: 34 representatives of the employees and three representatives of civil servants.

Data Protection Team

Regarding questions of data protection the Data Protection Team is the main contact for all members of the KIT. The team consists of the KIT Data Protection Commissioner and staff members of ZENDAS (Central Data Protection Office of the Universities in Baden-Wuerttemberg).

Representatives for Disabled Employees

The representatives for disabled employees promote the integration of severely disabled persons at KIT, represent their interests, and provide advice and help. Moreover, they support the disabled employees in filing applications for disability approval to the authority in charge (the District Office - "Landratsamt" - in Baden-Wuerttemberg or else the Pension Office - "Versorgungsamt") and for approval of equal opportunities to the Employment Agency.

Public research generates excellent results in a variety of disciplines. Apart from the publication and discussion of these results in the scientific community, economic utilization of research results and project-related cooperation with industry partners are gaining importance in the global competition of research and industry locations.

Cooperation of the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe and the Universität Karlsruhe (TH) results in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) having more than 4000 scientific staff members and an annual budget of more than EUR 600 million. The variety of natural and engineering sciences covered gives rise to an enormous innovation potential and a large number of market-relevant research results. Already today, both partners are among the leading innovation partners of industry in various fields. This role shall be further strengthened by KIT.

On the institute level, many cooperation projects with industry are pursued, mostly based on personal contacts of the institute management staff. In addition, central services are offered by the KIT Innovation Department. New instruments are being established, such as the Business Club, a special communication platform, or the Karlsruhe Innovation Foundation, in which sponsors, but also investors may cooperate innovatively with the KIT.

The Innovation Department represents the central information platform and service partner in the commercialization of research results. It informs partners from industry and science about the competences and research topics covered and makes available selected services in line with the innovation process. These services extend from patenting to technology marketing to specific contracting to the support of spin-offs.
