Kemira has signed a Baltic Sea Commitment to Act. The company announced the commitment yesterday in Helsinki, Finland, at the Kemira Baltic Sea Summit. The summit focused on ongoing projects and concrete, planned actions concerning waste water treatment in the Baltic Sea catchment area. Over 100 participants and speakers represented financial institutions and environmental authorities, including participants at ministerial level, from water works and different organizations.
The Commitment to Act was initiated by the Finnish Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG), a neutral organization founded in March 2008 for the rescue of the Baltic Sea. Kemira's business activities are playing a direct role in decreasing the wastewater load in the Baltic Sea. A significant share of the communities and cities within the Baltic Sea watershed clean their waste water using chemicals supplied by Kemira.
In its Commitment to Act, Kemira commits to lend its expertise and research efforts to returning sludge-borne valuable nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus, safely into the natural cycle without causing eutrophication in waterways. At the moment, the Baltic Sea Action Group is assembling a set of concrete actions to save the Baltic Sea, which is the most polluted sea in the world. All results of these commitments will be evaluated in the Baltic Sea Action Summit in Helsinki, Finland in February 2010.
"All waste water treatment produces sludge. The more efficient the waste water treatment, the greater the sludge disposal, and sludge disposal is a growing problem. Without their controlled return to nature, the nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in sludge can drift back and eutrophicate waterways, or accumulate in landfills. Kemira can make such sludge both hygienic and odorless, after which the sludge can be used in enhancing crop production in a safe manner. In Finland, sludge treated using Kemira's Kemicond method is accepted as such as a method of soil improvement. We have also developed a preliminary treatment method for controlling the heavy metal contents of sludge disposal, in cases where they restrict sludge use. In the Nordic Countries, the heavy metal contents of municipal sludge are not a problem," explains General Manager Aija Jantunen of Kemira's Water segment.
Kemira aims to be a key player and participant contributing to a cleaner future for the Baltic Sea. As part of its commitment to this, Kemira is participating in joint research projects related to water treatment, such as the Water Program for 2008-2012 launched by the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES). Kemira is also one of the main sponsors of the Helsinki Festival, with the Baltic Sea as a special theme.

Kemira FilamentEx™ - the expert's choice for preventing bulking sludge and foam
Kemira FilamentEx™ - the expert's choice for preventing bulking sludge and foam
The Kemira FilamentEx™ solution is not merely a product, it´s a concept aiming to have full control over the filament content in the wastewater – not only by testing and analyzing, but also by giving the right “medicine” in the right doses at the right time for each specific wastewater treatment plant.
The bulking sludge and foam challenge: Bulking sludge and foam are two undesirable, complicated and unpredictable challenges for many wastewater treatment plants globally. One of the most common ways to treat this is by adding various kinds of chemicals and hoping for the best. To make things even worse the addition of chemicals is often done randomly at too late a stage, with far too large quantities. This means a very limited control and understanding of the entire process – the result in some cases being that a wastewater treatment plant will suffer for years without finding a sustainable solution to the challenge.
The answer to the filament challenge: Kemira FilamentEx™ solution - the superior way of managing the treatment against the filamentous bacteria which suddenly appear without any obvious warning, formed in various locations in the plant and, in turn, causing bulking sludge and foam. The treatment has to be hard. Otherwise there is a risk of environmental damage and sewage overflow problems and – in the worst cases – process failure and lower treatment capacity.
The key benefit of FilamentEx™ is the powerful combination of services and products and a continuous control of the filamentous growth and formation in a bio-stage. A service and support contract is set up and the customer may choose between three different levels. The commitment is built on close collaboration, assuring that the conclusions made are beneficial to the customer.
The FilamentEx™ solution is based on extensive research, analysis, knowledge and experience, thereby making it possible to diagnose, draw the right conclusions and come up with a well balanced action plan. This has lead to a remedy to bulking sludge and foam caused by the filamentous bacteria.
Preventing formation of bulking sludge and foam, Kemira FilamentEx™ solution includes:
Test & analysis Diagnosis Right dosage Continuous control Action plan Three-level contract

Kemira KemiCond® - for superior dewatering performance
Kemira KemiCond® - for superior dewatering performance
A well executed water conditioning stage to minimize sludge volumes paves the way for a successful dewatering. Handling sludge in a sustainable manner reduces volumes, decreases costs and makes the sludge odourless and hygienised. Kemira Water knows how to help the customers to manage this
with the support of the patented solution Kemira KemiCond®.

The sludge challenge: The costs for sludge treatment – in terms of manpower, equipment and energy – accounts for about 50% of the overall cost of wastewater treatment. Moreover, most end users require that the sludge is transported to another destination. Therefore, it’s of great importance to increase the dry substance (DS), thereby reducing volumes and, in turn, cutting transportation and disposal costs.
The environmental debate puts wastewater plant operations under pressure to handle the sludge in a sustainable manner – and naturally according to current laws and regulations. The need for sustainable treatment technologies and careful managing of our most valuable asset – water – is greater now than ever. The treated sludge can be used in different ways – for agriculture, landfill, production of soil products and for incineration.
The answer to the sludge challenge: The basic idea of Kemira KemiCond® is to improve dewatering by breaking down the water retaining structures that are formed in sludge. The solution is a fully automated continuous process, ensuring smooth operation and minimum “workload” requirement. KemiCond® also decreases the customers’ operational costs through minimizing the sludge volumes.
In partnership with the customer Kemira Water takes full responsibility for process design, assists in equipment installation, performs operator training and carries out maintenance services and cares for the supply of conditioning chemicals. For the mechanical dewatering stage Kemira Water has assured that KemiCond® is fully compatible with all types of dewatering equipment.
The KemiCond® standard unit is supplied in a 40-foot container – or alternatively as a skid-mounted unit – containing a control cabinet, reactors, dosing pumps, etc. The KemiCond® standard unit is available in capacities up to 12000 ton DS per year. For higher capacities plant specific designs can be made. When the KemiCond® solution is up-and-running an optimization programme and performance follow-up is done on a regular basis. The Kemira KemiCond® solution package for sludge volume reduction, odourcontrol and sludge hygenisation comprises:
